After seizing Gaddafi's Bab Al-Aziziya headquarters, Libyan rebels brazenly celebrate while the former Libyan leader's whereabouts remain unknown.

Gaddafi's Headquarters Captured

On Tuesday (August 23, 2011,) Libyan rebels took Muammar Gaddafi's immense Tripoli-based compound after intense fighting. Although opposition forces had fallen back temporarily according to early reports by Reuters, they regrouped and stormed the Bab Al-Aziziya stronghold to triumphant success finishing the task of seizing Tripoli begun over the weekend. Proclaiming victory amid euphoric celebration, rebel fighters raised a flag of independence signalling a new chapter in Libya's history.

History in the Making

This development has instilled a huge burst of confidence in the rebel fighters long considered a very small David at war with a nearly invincible Goliath. That Gaddafi's 42-year reign of terror could so easily and swiftly be overturned remains a startling turn of events, the repercussions of which will be felt globally for some time.

Major Symbolic Victory for Opposition Forces

According to CNN, Yahoo!, Reuters, and Fox News, the Libyan rebels rampaged through Gaddafi's sprawling headquarters capturing a treasure trove of loot and weapons including personal items from the Libyan leader's bedroom. Most visible among these were Gaddafi's iconic military-inspired hat, a golden scepter, and a sizeable gold chain brandished by one Libyan man during an interview with an embedded Sky News correspondent.

Demise of the Compound

The seizure of the headquarters quickly turned into a frenzy of destruction and jubilation while the whereabouts of Gaddafi and his sons remains unknown. At the top of the priority list for the rebels was the destruction of numerous symbols associated with Gaddafi's violently repressive regime. With tools, weapons, and bare hands, the ever growing crowd set to work toppling walls, breaking windows, and destroying all vestiges of Gaddafi's rule. The smoldering remnants of Gaddafi's tent, a symbol of his Berber heritage and eccentric rule, served as a dramatic testament to the rebels' efficiency.

Mixed Reactions to Victory and Violence

While the festivities and destruction continued throughout the day across Tripoli, Western NATO forces were hesitant to declare victory, and the world is holding its breath fearing both future reprisals from the once greatly feared Gaddafi and what rebel control of Libya could mean. Media contacts on the ground have expressed a mixture of anxiety and astonishment suggesting that, in some cases, the wave of destruction by opposition forces and the ensuing mob may not be easily reined in or haulted. There are also rumors that Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi's son, has escaped rebel capture and may be attempting to rally support among loyalists in Tripoli.

An Uncertain Future Has the World on Edge

Comparisons have already been made between the scene in Tripoli in 2011 and that of Iraq in 2003 following the downfall of another iron-fisted oppressor. Toppling statues of Saddam Hussein quickly gave way to rampant looting from which Baghdad may never fully recover. It is unclear whether the lessons learned in Iraq can be applied to the transition of power that is yet to occur in Libya. In the meantime, the hunt for Libya's dictator of 42 years and his sons continues amid Western anxieties about weapons caches and the ultimate identities, affiliations, and purposes of this ragtag band of rebel fighters.
